What is Hypatos?
Hypatos develops deep learning technology components for automation of document based processes. Our AI allows to extract, validate and process semi-structured documents such as invoices, receipts, payslips, medical prescriptions, CVs and bank statements. This is also referred to as cognitive process automation.
What is Cognitive Process Automation (CPA)?
Cognitive means machine learning and deep learning based automation technology. It goes beyond robotics process automation (RPA) that is rule based and can only perform comparably simple backoffice tasks, e.g., copying structured data from a spreadsheet to an ERP system. More advanced tasks that require human understanding, e.g., interpreting a document or deciding which clerk worker should be approving it is beyond a robot's capabilities. Deep learning technology can perform these tasks and enhance the automation capabilities of RPA.
What can Hypatos be used for?
Our clients use Hypatos to automate document processing like accounts payable, expense management, loan applications, auditing and tax compliance management.
How does it work?
Documents (image, PDF) are send to Hypatos from input management services, scanning solutions or document management systems.
As part of the capturing process OCR converts the containing written text in the images into machine-readable text data. This text gets read and interpreted by the Hypatos AI model and translated into meaningful structured data.
Afterwards in the Hypatos completion tool such data can be manually adjusted and enriched with further information.
Any manually added additional information will be fed back to the Hypatos AI training engine in order to let the model continuously learn and improve.
In order to detect missing/wrong data or implement something more complex like a EU VAT compliance checker, the Validation step allows clients to apply their own specific validation rules to the structured data.
Based on extensive document understanding Hypatos deep learning models are able to automate advanced tasks like accouting.
Our standard data interchange format is JSON, which contains the information of the inserted image, including all the extracted, validated and processed information which can be easily integrated to any ERP or CRM system.
Our Hypatos AI training Engine can constantly learn and improve from data coming from clients’ adjustments in their own ERP or CRM systems.
What is unique about Hypatos?
Hypatos differentiates itself because it uses a unique combination of deep learning technologies (more detailed in question below), offers a variety of semi-structured document use cases and languages, delivers customized models, provides advanced processing automation beyond capturing, and enables on premise, cloud and hybrid delivery.
What technologies is Hypatos using?
Our novel document understanding approach leverages a combination of several Deep Learning technologies.
Pre-Processing Hypatos uses built-in OCR (optical character recognition) technology and Word embedding, which allows converting any images of typed or printed text into machine-encoded text.
For the Data Capturing process, we applied a novel combination of Deep Neural Network models to capture data from semi-structured documents to fully understand them for further automation processes. Our text understanding technology is based on an ensemble model of multiple Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN). Our table understanding is enabled with multiple Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to analyze visual imagery like graphs & tables to understand structured content.
In our advanced processes like automated accounting, we enrich document content with additional information using a Multilayer Perceptron neural network (MLP).
Who is Hypatos for?

How much does it cost?
We offer three different Editions.
Our Community Edition is for free and a perfect start to try the product. Please note, that this version is limited to 16 Datapoints. The subscription edition starts at 500Euro per month and document type and includes 2500 docs (additional documents cost 0,20Eur). Pricing for the enterprise edition is available on request.
Do I need to have tech knowledge to use Hypatos?
Hypatos is a developer friendly. Our Rest-APIs can easily be integrated in existing systems and software applications.
What is the difference to Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solutions?
The automation of simple physical tasks that do not require knowledge or understanding is nothing new in the field of robotics (RPA). However, cognitive automation goes beyond configuring simple if-then rules. It touches upon the knowledge base of a human being and other attributes involving intuition or judgement. To analyze and understand documents (like a human brain), Hypatos combines multiple machine learning technologies such as word embedding, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to understand text sequences and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for visual analysis of elements like tables.
Can Hypatos be combined with RPA solutions?
Yes. Hypatos components can be combined with RPA for end-to-end automation.
What are the products?

What documents types can Hypatos be used for?
Hypatos offers models for invoices, receipts, bank statements, payslips, medical prescriptions and CVs. For enterprise clients we also built customized models that suit your needs.
What means semi-structured documents?
Semi structured documents contain expected key fields, however, they may vary in their positioning. Examples of this format are invoices: In most cases at the top of invoice, you will find “Sender Company Name, Sender Street, Invoice Date” and then line items with “Item Number, Name, Description, etc...”. The mentioned entities appear on all invoices but also with a different arrangement on the document.
Can I get a customized model that suits my needs?
We offer ML automation models (skills) for various processes tailored to the needs of enterprise clients. Pre-engineered and trained automation models and validation rules for major backoffice tasks can be easily customized based on client requirements and client’s training data.
What does on premise vs cloud mean?
Our OnPrem solution is installed and run on computers on the premises of our client organisation. It is best suited for enterprise businesses, that desire to host all servers on the client side.
Our cloud solutions benefit in low upfront costs, high system stability and ease of access.
How is the OnPrem solution delivered?
In the Community and the Subscription Edition Hypatos is delivered via Docker Swarm.
In the Enterprise Edition Hypatos is delivered and orchestrated with Replicated for maximal scalabilty. When no connection to the internet is allowed for special security requirements a Replicated “Airgap” installation is also available.
Docker packs, ships, and runs Hypatos API in a lightweight, portable, self-sufficient container. It makes managing and deploying applications easy.
How can I use the cloud solution?
Our cloud-based solution is hosted on the Hypatos servers and can be accessed through a HTTP REST API. From the client side minimum hardware is required.
For the Enterprise Edition we also offer a multi cloud solution on Kubernetes for maximal scalabilty.
Can I do a PoC?
For Enterprise Edition products we offer PoCs and pilot projects that will be individually contracted. Please get in contact with our sales team for further information.

What is if we have existing processes in place already?
Hypatos is a component technology so we ensure easy integration of services in existing systems and software applications. Please have a look at our API integration.
Information security and data protection
How is data protected? What happens to confidential data such as invoices?
Hypatos has no access to your data and does not have any insights on it. Any document send to the Hypatos API does not get recorded, stored, used or shared with third parties. If the service runs on premise, data will never leave clients system.
Is the cloud solution delivery safe?
Hypatos on cloud services are running on secure AWS servers.
